Karin Gunnarsson is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in Education at the Department of Education, Stockholm University. She is actively engaged with two research groups at the university: the Philosophical and Critical Studies in Education group and the Encountering Subject Matter Didactics and Post-Theoretical Approaches group.
Her research interests focus on sexuality education, social justice education, posthumanist and feminist materialisms, and postqualitative and practice-based methodologies. Gunnarsson's work is characterized by a strong theoretical foundation combined with empirical engagements, particularly in the realm of educational practice. She is inspired by posthumanist approaches and explores methodological questions concerning postqualitative and collaborative research.
Gunnarsson's recent publications reveal a consistent thematic focus on the intersection of theory and practice in educational settings, particularly regarding sexuality education and the teaching of norms and equality. Her work frequently employs posthumanist and feminist materialist frameworks to examine how educational practices are shaped by affective dimensions, socio-material capacities, and relational ontologies. A recurring theme across her publications is the exploration of how facts and values become entangled in educational contexts.
She currently supervises five doctoral students across different institutions including Stockholm University, Umeå University, Högskolan i Gävle, and Åbo Akademi in Finland. Since 2020, she has led the practice-based research project 'Enacting Sex Education,' which explores sexuality education in Swedish secondary schools through sociomaterial and posthumanist theoretical lenses.
