Sara Nichols serves as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Music within Towson University's College of Fine Arts and Communication, while also maintaining a position at the Baltimore School for the Arts.
Her educational background includes a graduate degree from Auburn University and a Master of Music in Flute Performance from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where she studied under Robert Cavally, Timothy Day, Britton Johnson, and Lida Mayfield.
Nichols maintains an active dual career as a performer and educator. Her performance interests span orchestral repertoire, chamber music, historical traverso performance with Pro Musica Rara, and opera orchestration. She has developed specialized expertise in flute pedagogy and performance techniques across diverse musical settings from Broadway productions to international festivals.
Her notable achievements include:
- Winner of the National Flute Association Performer’s Competition
- Grammy-nominated recording credit for Wolf Trap Opera Company’s Volpone
Nichols has mentored award-winning students who have secured positions in prestigious ensembles and conservatories nationwide. Her professional service includes leadership roles in the Flute Society of Washington, where she chairs the High School Flute Choir Competition and organizes the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. Her international performance career spans major orchestras across the United States, Italy, Poland, and Russia, with significant tenures as Principal Flutist of the Baltimore Opera Orchestra (1987-2009) and Acting Assistant Principal Flute of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
