Sara J. Markowitz is the Winship Distinguished Research Professor of Economics at Emory University, holding joint appointments in the Department of Economics and the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Rollins School of Public Health. She is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Her research focuses on health economics, labor economics, and applied microeconomics, with a particular emphasis on how public policies impact health outcomes, maternal and child health, and healthcare markets.
- Education: PhD in Economics from the Graduate Center, CUNY (1998); MA in Economics from Hunter College (1998); BA in Economics and English from Rutgers University (1993).
Her work examines the effects of Medicaid expansions, nurse practitioner scope of practice laws, and anti-poverty policies like the Earned Income Tax Credit on health outcomes. Recent studies include analyses of maternal morbidity linked to ACA Medicaid expansions and the relationship between scope of practice regulations and patient harm.
Awards include the Winship Distinguished Research Professorship (2021–2024) and two Adam Smith Awards for Mental Health Policy Research. She has advised numerous doctoral students, with placements in academia and public health institutions. Her grants include NIH-funded projects on maternal morbidity and healthcare workforce policies.
She serves as an editor for the Journal of Health Economics and Review of Economics of the Household, and is active in professional organizations such as the American Society of Health Economists.
