Dr. Sara Fruehe serves as Assistant Professor at Columbus State University's Schwob School of Music, where she excels as a bassoonist, chamber musician, orchestral performer, and educator. Her career bridges performance artistry with academic leadership across multiple institutions.
Her educational foundation includes a Doctor of Music in Bassoon Performance and Literature from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (minors in music history and arts administration), a Master of Music from DePaul University, and a Bachelor of Music from the Jacobs School. Primary mentors include William Ludwig, Arthur Weisberg, William Buchman, and Robert Barris.
Dr. Fruehe's research centers on expanding bassoon repertoire through commissioning new works and pedagogical innovation, notably her dissertation 'The Operatic Bassoon: A Pedagogical Excerpt Collection'. She actively premieres contemporary compositions while emphasizing community engagement and diverse programming in chamber music contexts.
Her ensemble Volante Winds earned six major competition recognitions between 2017-2022, including multiple American Prize finalist nominations. Current projects with 10th Muse focus on commissioning reed trios from emerging composers.

As an educator, Dr. Fruehe has held faculty positions at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (Visiting Assistant Professor), James Madison University (Adjunct Faculty), and maintains private studios. She conducts masterclasses nationwide at institutions including University of Alabama, Auburn University, and University of Northern Iowa, while serving as artist-faculty for IU Summer Music Clinic.
Her performance career includes second bassoon with Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra since 2017 and regular appearances with Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, Battle Creek Symphony, and other Midwestern ensembles. The all-female reed trio 10th Muse represents her current artistic focus on innovative programming and new commissions.
