Dr. Sara Freeman is a Professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Puget Sound, where she has held leadership roles such as Department Chair and Faculty Senate Chair. She also serves as President of Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas. Her academic career is complemented by an active practice as a director and dramaturg.
Freeman earned her BA from the University of Puget Sound in 1995, followed by an MA and PhD in Theatre Arts from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1997 and 2002, respectively.
Her research focuses on contemporary playwriting, political and feminist theatre, and dramaturgy. She has authored Playwriting, Dramaturgy, and Space (Cambridge Elements Series) and co-edited volumes such as International Dramaturgy: Translation and Transformations in the Theatre of Timberlake Wertenbaker and Public Theatres and Theatre Publics. Her work bridges academic and applied theatre, emphasizing the intersection of performance, politics, and space.
Freeman has won the Gerald Kahan Award from the American Society for Theatre Research in 2007 for her article on the Joint Stock Theatre Company, published in Theatre Survey. Her scholarship also appears in journals such as Modern Drama, Contemporary Theatre Review, and Comparative Drama.
In addition to her academic roles, she has directed and dramaturged numerous productions, including Measure for Measure at Puget Sound and Fairview for empathos theatre. Her directing portfolio includes works by Shakespeare, Sarah Ruhl, and Caryl Churchill, showcasing her engagement with both classical and contemporary theatre.
