Christopher Baker serves as Associate Professor of Dramaturgy in the Theater Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, bringing over 30 years of professional experience across regional, Off-Broadway, and academic theater. Previously, he held roles including Associate Artistic Director and Senior Dramaturg at Hartford Stage (1998-2013), taught at the University of North Carolina, Moscow Art Theatre School, and Hartt School, and served as literary advisor to Juilliard School of Drama.
His creative expertise spans dramaturgy, playwriting, and directing, with notable works including the record-breaking adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, original plays The Lincoln Vaudeville and Calliope Jam, and directorial projects like Oleanna and Hartford Opera Theatre productions. Scholarly contributions include books Shakespeare in an Hour and Molière in an Hour, plus articles in Theatre Journal and American Theatre covering historical theater practices and contemporary dramaturgy.
Baker has mentored through academic appointments and advisory roles, with professional credits including dramaturgy for the North American premiere of The King's Speech, Horton Foote's The Roads to Home, and Tennessee Williams' The Night of the Iguana. His work consistently bridges classical texts and modern performance, emphasizing literary adaptation and directorial innovation within American theater traditions.
