Sara English is an Associate Professor of Social Work and Director of the Gerontology Program at Winthrop University’s College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of South Carolina, an M.S.W. from Winthrop University, and a B.A. in Behavioral Science from Columbia College. Her research focuses on non-familial relationships in institutional settings, younger residents in long-term care, and mindfulness practices in mental health. She is a Certified Gerontology Professional (CPG) and AGE-SW Fellow, and has presented globally on aging and social work. Awards include the 2022 NASW-SC Social Work Educator of the Year and recognition as Winthrop’s 2023-2024 Thompson Scholar for her student-focused mindfulness program.
Dr. English serves on the Alzheimer’s Advisory Board for the SC Lieutenant Governor’s Office on Aging and chairs Winthrop’s Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society. She also leads the university’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. Her work bridges qualitative research with practical applications, emphasizing marginalized populations and innovative care models.
