Sara Blumer-Schuette is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. She holds a Ph.D. and maintains her laboratory in MSC 330, with office space in MSC 331. Her research focuses on extremophilic microorganisms and their applications in biotechnology, particularly studying non-model environmental microorganisms living at the extremes of life.
Professor Blumer-Schuette's research interests center around microbial physiology and genomics of extremophiles, with specific focus on mechanisms used by thermophilic microbes to interact with energy substrates. Her work explores microbial attachment mechanisms, environmental implications of energy harvesting processes, and identifying targets for rational design of commercially relevant microbes. She also investigates transport systems used to secrete large enzymes (some over 200 kDa) by monoderm bacteria and methods to optimize secretion efficiency.
Analysis of her publication record reveals a consistent focus on thermophilic bacteria from the genus Caldicellulosiruptor, with research spanning microbial physiology, genomics, and biotechnology applications.
