Sara C. Benesh is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She holds a PhD (1999), MA (1997), and BA (1995) in Political Science from Michigan State University and Saint Norbert College, respectively. Her research focuses on judicial decision-making processes across U.S. courts, particularly examining the Supreme Court, Courts of Appeals, and state courts of last resort. She analyzes issues like court legitimacy, procedural fairness, and institutional dynamics. Her work often explores how lower courts respond to Supreme Court rulings and the effects of judicial elections on public trust.
Benesh has published extensively on judicial behavior, co-authoring books such as The Supreme Court in the American Legal System (2005) and The U.S. Court of Appeals and the Law of Confessions (2002). Her recent scholarship addresses shadow docket procedures and recusal practices. Teaching responsibilities include courses on law & society, judicial politics, and civil liberties. She leads the UWM SURF Project on Supreme Court justice appearances and collaborates with colleagues on projects analyzing judicial advisory networks.
Her grants and awards include collaborative research funding from the National Science Foundation for individual-level Supreme Court justice analysis. Benesh is affiliated with the American Political Science Association and contributes to the Supreme Court Database project. Her work bridges legal scholarship, political science, and institutional analysis, emphasizing empirical methods to understand judicial systems' inner workings.
