Saptarshi Sen is an Assistant Professor/CDIC Lecturer in the School of Civil Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD). He specializes in transportation engineering, teaching modules such as Introduction to Transportation and Traffic Engineering and Highway Engineering. His research focuses on sustainable transport systems, travel behavior analysis, road safety, and policy formulation. Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2023-2024) on the NEXSYS project, which aimed to decarbonize rural public transport in Ireland. Earlier roles include Senior Project Officer at IIT Kharagpur, India, where he led urban transportation research projects.
Education: PhD in Transportation Engineering from Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (India). Professional Affiliations include the Institution of Engineers (India), Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies (EASTS), and World Conference on Transport Research Society (WCTRS). Languages: Fluent in English, Bengali, Hindi, and basic Spanish.
Research highlights include studies on public bus service quality, first-and-last mile connectivity for metro systems, road safety modeling, and congestion cost estimation. Teaching activities span undergraduate transportation modules and coordination of Highway Engineering courses. Collaborates internationally on user perception, sustainable mobility, and health impacts of travel behavior.
