Sanjiv J Shah

Sanjiv J. Shah, MD is the Stone Endowed Professor and Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He serves as Director of Research for the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute, Director of the Center for Deep Phenotyping and Precision Medicine in the Institute for Augmented Intelligence in Medicine, and Director of the Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) Program. Dr. Shah founded the world's first dedicated HFpEF program in 2007, which has become a model for similar programs globally.

Dr. Shah earned his MD from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 2000, followed by residency at University of California-San Francisco Medical Center (2003), and fellowships at University of California Medical Center, San Francisco/Parnassus (2006) and University of Chicago Hospitals (2007). He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, and Adult Echocardiography.

Dr. Shah's research program focuses on understanding the pathogenesis of HFpEF, which affects over 50% of heart failure patients and has limited treatment options. His work spans basic research in animal models, clinical physiologic studies, human clinical trials, and population-based epidemiology studies. He has pioneered the use of machine learning for cardiovascular disease classification and diagnosis, and his laboratory investigates abnormal cardiac mechanics, AI for echocardiogram interpretation, adipocyte-endothelium-cardiomyocyte interactions, and novel therapeutics for heart failure. As principal investigator of the NIH HeartShare Study Data Translation Center, he leads a large-scale initiative to apply phenomics to identify heart failure subtypes and treatment targets.

Analysis of Dr. Shah's recent publications shows a strong focus on HFpEF pathophysiology, biomarker discovery, machine learning applications in cardiology, and novel therapeutic approaches. His research spans from molecular mechanisms to population studies, with particular emphasis on identifying subtypes of heart failure to enable precision medicine approaches. The integration of artificial intelligence with deep phenotyping represents a major theme across his recent work.

Dr. Shah has mentored over 50 individuals including undergraduates, medical students, post-doctoral fellows, cardiology fellows, and early-stage faculty. He has received continuous funding from the American Heart Association and NIH since 2008, and serves as principal investigator for multiple clinical trials including the NIH HeartShare Study. He has served as international principal investigator, executive committee member, or steering committee member for over 35 multicenter randomized clinical trials in heart failure, contributing to the development of the first proven treatment for transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis.

Dr. Shah directs a multidisciplinary laboratory that includes basic science researchers, clinical investigators, data scientists, and physicians. His team conducts research across multiple domains including molecular pathogenesis studies, clinical trials, machine learning applications, and population-based research. The Shah Lab also runs the HeartShare Research Skills Program, a 1-year research fellowship for post-doctoral trainees interested in clinical research skills in data science.
