Professor Sang-Gook Kim is a faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He previously held industrial engineering and executive positions at Daewoo Corporation (1991-2000) and adjunct roles at Ajou University. His research spans product realization, MEMS, and sustainable energy technologies.
- B.S., Seoul National University (1978)
- M.S., Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (1980)
- Ph.D., MIT (1985)
Professor Kim’s research focuses on piezoelectric MEMS, energy harvesting (micro, solar, water splitting), and AI for design. He pioneered axiomatic design principles and explores nanomanufacturing for carbon neutrality. His work bridges human-cyber-physical systems and smart manufacturing.
His publications emphasize MEMS energy harvesting, photonic crystals, and nano-engineered systems for sustainable energy. Key trends include biomedical device integration, plasmonics, and wearable strain sensors.
- 2011 Keenan Award for Innovation in Undergraduate Education
- 2001-2004 Edgerton Professorship
- 1999 KSME Baikbong Technology Award
- 1998 Daewoo Technology Award (Grand Prize)
- 1998 Best Industrial Technology Award (Presidential Grand Prize)
Scientific Awards
As Micro/Nano Area Head at MIT, he leads the Park Center for Complexity and contributes to MEMS@MIT. He has served on committees for graduate admissions, research councils, and MIT’s library systems, with a focus on advancing manufacturing education and infrastructure.
