John Hart serves as the Class of 1922 Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He concurrently directs the Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity and the Center for Advanced Production Technologies, while co-leading the MIT Initiative for New Manufacturing.
His educational background includes a B.S.E. from the University of Michigan (2000), followed by an S.M. (2002) and Ph.D. (2006) from MIT. Professor Hart's research focuses on manufacturing science and technology for sustainable growth, with core expertise in additive manufacturing, carbon nanomaterials, roll-to-roll processing, and resource-efficient sensing systems. His Mechanosynthesis Group bridges fundamental principles with real-world applications across multiple engineering disciplines.
Among his extensive honors are the NSF CAREER Award (2012), 3M Nontenured Faculty Award (2014), and dual MIT teaching recognitions: the Keenan Award (2018) and Ruth and Joel Spira Award (2017). His innovation impact is further evidenced by R&D100 Awards for nanomanufacturing systems.
Professor Hart co-founded industry-disrupting ventures VulcanForms and Desktop Metal, serves on Carpenter Technology Corporation's Board of Directors, and leads research supported by NSF, DOE, and AFOSR grants. His group maintains strategic affiliations with MIT's Microsystems Technology Laboratories, Energy Initiative, Materials Research Laboratory, and Tata Center for Technology and Design.
