Sandra Reid is a dedicated educator and advocate for the Deaf community. She holds positions at the University of Alberta, teaching ASL within the Modern Languages and Cultural Studies department since 2015. Her career spans 33 years with the Edmonton Public School Board, where she pioneered ASL instruction for hearing high school students and taught at institutions like Alberta School for the Deaf, MacEwan University, and Lakeland College. She actively contributes to Deaf community initiatives, serving as president of the Alberta Cultural Society of the Deaf since 2008.
Dr. Reid earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Gallaudet University and a Master of Education in Deaf Education from McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland College). Her research interests include ASL pedagogy, Deaf culture, and combating audism to promote accessibility.
She has been honored with CCSD's Deaf Person of the Year Award (2014) and remains involved in organizations like the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf and ASLICE. Her work emphasizes cultural preservation and educational equity for Deaf communities.
