Sandra Elena Terra is an Associate Professor of Spanish and Coordinator of the Spanish Program at Linfield University. A native of Chile and Brazil and a first-generation Latina immigrant to Oregon, she passionately advocates for multilingualism and multiculturalism through her teaching and community initiatives.
Her educational background includes:
- B.A. in French from Oregon State University
- M.A. in Spanish from the University of Oregon
- Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
Professor Terra's research explores sociolinguistic dynamics in bilingual communities, with emphasis on language maintenance across generations and identity formation among heritage speakers. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical classroom applications, particularly in healthcare communication through Spanish for health professions training. She examines how cultural contexts shape language evolution and educational outcomes in diverse settings.

Dr. Terra actively shapes academic life as founder of Linfield's Spanglish Day Celebration and advisor to the Spanish Club. Her external leadership includes past presidency of the Confederation in Oregon for Language Teaching (COFLT) and consultancy for McMinnville School District, where she provides proficiency testing and develops multilingual education strategies. These roles demonstrate her commitment to expanding language access beyond campus boundaries.
