Samuel Thomas is a Professor and Senior Dean of Academic Affairs at Tufts University's School of Arts and Sciences, affiliated with the Department of Chemistry. He holds a PhD from MIT (2006) and a BS from the University of Rochester (2000). His research focuses on organic materials chemistry, particularly photoresponsive materials, conjugated polymers, and singlet oxygen sensing. Key projects include photochemical control of charge interactions, functional side-chain engineering for conjugated materials, and singlet oxygen-responsive probes for biomedical applications.
Research highlights include developing light-switchable polymers, mechanofluorochromic materials, and enhanced singlet oxygen detectors. He has authored over 125 publications and secured grants from NSF, DOE, and NIH. Awards include the 2016 Tufts Department Service Award. His lab advises PhD students in polymer chemistry, materials design, and photodynamic therapy. Teaching includes advanced research and thesis supervision across undergraduate and graduate programs.
Notable patents include 'Singlet Oxygen Degradable Materials' and 'Photo-responsive Membranes.' Professional activities include invited seminars at MIT, UMass Lowell, and CUNY. His work bridges fundamental chemistry with applications in energy, healthcare, and nanotechnology.
