Alan Lyons is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the College of Staten Island and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY), joining in 2008. His research focuses on superhydrophobic materials, 3D printing for thermal management, and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy. Prior to CUNY, he spent over 25 years at Bell Laboratories as a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff, leading thermal management innovations including thermal interface materials and cooling architectures for electronics.
Education: Ph.D. in Polymer Chemistry from NYU-Tandon (Brooklyn, NY) and Sc.B. in Chemistry from Brown University (Providence, RI).
Research emphasizes superhydrophobic surfaces for self-cleaning, energy applications, and biomedical uses. Notable achievements include 58 refereed publications and 41 issued US patents, particularly in thermal management and material science. Awards include his Distinguished Member status at Bell Labs.
Key publications span 2011-2025, covering topics like singlet oxygen generation, anti-soiling coatings, and biomedical device design. His Lyons Lab explores interdisciplinary applications of superhydrophobic materials, collaborating across chemistry, engineering, and medicine.
