Samuel Parler, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Music History at the School of Music, Baylor University (joined 2019). He specializes in U.S. popular music, particularly country music, with research focusing on genre, identity, and media.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from Harvard University (2017)
- B.Mus. in Musical Arts/Piano from Vanderbilt University (2009)
Research Interests include racial respectability in early country music (book project under contract with University of Illinois Press), authenticity politics, and media’s role in shaping musical narratives.
Scientific Awards:
- American Council of Learned Societies research award
- Society for American Music research award
- Popular Music Study Group (AMS) research award
Teaching: Courses on popular music, jazz, and 20th-/21st-century classical repertories. Previously taught at Denison University (Granville, Ohio).
