Samuel Holzman is an Assistant Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University, directing the Program in Archaeology and affiliated with the Stanley J. Seeger '52 Center for Hellenic Studies. His research focuses on Greek and Anatolian archaeology from the Early Iron Age through Hellenistic periods, emphasizing architectural history, ancient building methods, and digital reconstruction. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2019). Holzman leads excavations at Samothrace and co-organizes the PITHOS program, fostering collaboration between U.S. and Greek archaeologists. His work bridges ancient engineering, Vitruvian theory, and digital methodologies, supported by grants from Fulbright, the American School of Classical Studies, and the Kolb Society.
Research interests include Ionic architectural capitals, Hellenistic structural innovation (e.g., flat-arch construction), and ancient technologies like textile weaving and lyre-making. He integrates fieldwork, material analysis, and digital modeling, notably contributing to the Parthenon Restoration Project. Courses taught emphasize hands-on methods, including archaeological drawing and analysis of museum collections. Holzman’s publications explore architectural historiography, Vitruvius’ influence, and cross-cultural exchanges in the ancient Mediterranean.
