Samara Swanston is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture, specializing in Environmental Law and Justice. She has held significant roles in environmental advocacy and legal practice, including a two-year clerkship at the New York Court of Appeals and positions as environmental counsel for the Town of Babylon and Suffolk County.

Her work spans litigation, legislative drafting, and environmental policy, notably leading the creation of the Long Island Pine Barrens Maritime Reserve Act and drafting over 50 local laws. At the Environmental Protection Agency, she initiated the Region 2 Environmental Justice Workgroup and contributed to the 1992 Environmental Equity Report.
Swanston is currently Legislative Counsel to the New York City Council Environmental Protection Committee and an Adjunct Professor at Pratt’s Graduate School for Urban Planning and the Environment. She also served as an Administrative Law Judge for the New York City Environmental Control Board for nine years.
