Samantha Brennan is the Dean of the College of Arts and a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Guelph. Previously, she held positions at Western University, including Professor of Philosophy and Women’s Studies. Her research focuses on normative ethics, feminist philosophy, children’s rights, and the moral significance of death. She has authored/co-authored books such as Fit at Midlife: A Feminist Fitness Journey and edited volumes on procreation ethics and bioethics in Canada.
Brennan’s education includes a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Illinois at Chicago (1993) and a BA from Dalhousie University (1988). She has received awards like the Faculty Scholar from Western University (2005–2007) and visiting fellowships at the University of Toronto and Australian National University.
Her work bridges ethics and social justice, with key themes including micro-inequities in academia, gendered fitness norms, and the intrinsic goods of childhood. She has supervised numerous doctoral students and contributed to over 100 journal articles and book chapters. Brennan actively engages with public philosophy through blogs like Fit is a Feminist Issue and media interviews on topics ranging from parenting ethics to sports ethics.
