Samantha Brennan is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Dean of the College of Arts at the University of Guelph. She holds a cross-appointment to the Department of Women’s Studies and Feminist Research and is eligible to supervise doctoral dissertations in Political Science. Her research focuses on contemporary moral theory, feminist ethics, political philosophy, and family justice. Brennan previously served as Chair of the Department of Philosophy at Western University (2002-2007, 2008-2011) and has held leadership roles such as Past President of the Canadian Philosophical Association.
Her work emphasizes moderate deontology, exploring how deontological constraints interact with consequentialist considerations. Key themes include children’s rights (particularly tobacco control policies affecting parental autonomy), feminist reconfigurations of autonomy, and the ethical prioritization of systemic inequalities. Brennan has co-authored influential edited volumes like Philosophy and Death and Broadview Anthology of Social and Political Theory, and contributed to journals such as Philosophical Perspectives and Hypatia.
Brennan’s articles analyze ethical frameworks, rights thresholds, and gendered dimensions of mortality. She has presented at international conferences on topics ranging from micro-inequities in philosophy to global justice for children.
