Dr. Sam Hirst is a Teaching Associate in the School of English at the University of Sheffield, currently employed part-time on a research project at Newstead Abbey. He holds a PhD in 'The Theology of the Early British Gothic, 174-1833' from Manchester Metropolitan University and teaching qualifications (PGCLTHE and PGDAP). His career includes roles at Manchester Metropolitan, Leeds University, Liverpool University, Oxford Brookes, and Nottingham as a Research Associate collaborating on Byron-related projects.
Education:
- Bachelor’s in Russian and Spanish with focus on Russian Romantic literature
- MA in 'The Gothic Imagination' at Stirling University
- PhD in Gothic theology at Manchester Metropolitan
- Teaching qualifications: PGCLTHE (ManMet) and PGDAP (Liverpool)
Research Interests: Intersections of literary theology in late 18th/early 19th century literature, Gothic romance, literary tourism, women writers of the Romantic period, and horror studies. He explores how religious themes permeate Gothic works and their cultural legacy.
Publications & Awards: Published a monograph Theology in the Early British and Irish Gothic, 1764-1834 (Anthem Press, 2023), which was shortlisted for the Alan Lloyd Smith Prize. Authored numerous articles on Gothic theology and co-created a digital world based on Villa Diodati with Science VR. His work appears in Palgrave Communications, History Today, and queer Gothic anthologies.
Collaborations & Grants:
- AHRC IAA grant for post-doctoral work on literary tourism
- Collaborations with Nottingham City Libraries, Brontë Parsonage, and Newstead Abbey
- Runs Romancing the Gothic – free educational lectures and annual conferences
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with Newstead Abbey on digitizing historical documents and creating exhibitions, including a display based on William Linley’s Summer Rambles of 1825.
