Barber’s work focuses on secular architecture’s role in shaping authority, particularly in the premodern Mediterranean. His current book project, The Early Medieval Palace: Architectures of Authority, 300–800 CE, examines how the collapse of the Western Roman Empire influenced spatial organization, including the shift from horizontal Roman elite houses to vertically oriented structures symbolizing rulership. He also investigates Late Antique urbanism, protest materiality, and intermedial relationships between portable objects and architecture.
His recent publications address architectural iconography, political dissent in urban spaces, and spatial symbolism in early medieval Mediterranean contexts. Barber’s research bridges historical analysis with contemporary theoretical frameworks.
