Gregor Kalas is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His research focuses on Late Antiquity and early medieval architecture, particularly the adaptive reuse of ancient structures to explore historical memory and urban transformation. He holds grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation.
Research Interests: Kalas investigates how architectural adaptation reconnects communities with their past. His work combines historical analysis with digital reconstruction techniques, exemplified by his digital modeling of Rome's urban core to study ritual functions and spatial connectivity. Current projects examine early medieval charity centers established in repurposed Roman public buildings.
Key Publications: His 2015 monograph The Restoration of the Roman Forum in Late Antiquity analyzes political symbolism in urban space, while his 2021 co-edited volume Urban Developments in Late Antique and Medieval Rome redefines understanding of post-classical urban vitality.
