Dr Catherine Hailstone is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of History at Durham University. Her research focuses on emotions, architecture, and theology in late antique Gaul and Italy (c.400-600 CE). She holds a PhD from the University of York (2016-2020), funded by AHRC and WRoCAH, and is author of a forthcoming monograph on fear in the works of Gregory of Tours. Her current project examines emotionally-powerful atmospheres in late antique churches, combining historical, archaeological, and 3D modelling methodologies.

Research Interests
Dr Hailstone explores how late antique religious spaces like churches and basilicas created emotionally charged atmospheres through architecture, relics, liturgy, and symbolism. Her work bridges emotion history, spatial analysis, and material culture, with particular attention to:
- Power dynamics in sacred spaces
- Gregory of Tours' theological writings
- Relics and ascetic practices
- Roman imperial decline's cultural impacts

Future Work
