Salya Akhtar is a Lecturer and Graduate Research Teaching Assistant at Birmingham City University (BCU). She earned a First-class Honours degree in Sociology and Psychology from BCU in 2008, transitioned to teaching via a PGCE PCET qualification, and later achieved a Distinction in her MA Education. With nearly a decade of experience teaching secondary English (KS3/4/5) in Birmingham and the Black Country, she has worked in both mainstream schools and high-security prison offender education.
Her current research focuses on the professional identities of Early Career Teachers and their relationship with knowledge-rich curricula, emphasizing equality, diversity, and inclusion. She actively contributes to BCU's research community through conference participation and seminars, while teaching on the Secondary English Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program and supporting the Early Career Framework initiative.
