Dr. Salome Kurth holds the position of Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Humanities, University of Fribourg. She received her PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Zurich (2011) and MSc in Biology from the University of Bern (2007). Prior to her current role, she served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Colorado Boulder (2012-2016) and held a Junior Start-up grant at the University of Zurich (2016-2018).
- PhD: University of Zurich (2011)
- MSc: University of Bern (2007)
Her research focuses on the intricate relationships between infant sleep regulation, neurophysiological development, and gut microbiome interactions. She pioneered high-spatial resolution EEG studies to map sleep patterns and discovered posterior-to-anterior shifts in slow wave activity (SWA) that correlate with cortical maturation and behavioral outcomes. Her work has identified critical periods (e.g., 3 months) where sleep habits and microbial markers predict developmental trajectories.
Current research trends show strong emphasis on: gut-brain-sleep axis cross-sectional studies, actigraphy-based sleep monitoring, melatonin as microbiome biomarker, and dietary interventions for sleep stability. These studies often involve multi-institutional collaborations with University Hospital Zurich and University of Colorado Boulder.
- SNSF Eccellenza Professorial Fellowship (2019-present)
Her grants include the SNSF-funded project "Development of sleep regulation – a window of opportunity for fostering healthy development" (2019-2025) and the completed GrumpyBiome project (2022-2024) exploring gut microbiota-sleep synchronization. She leads the Baby Sleep Lab, integrating neuroimaging and microbiome analysis to advance pediatric sleep science.
