Salome Kristensen

Clinical Associate Professor and Senior Physician at Aalborg University Hospital within the Clinical Institute of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Kristensen leads research in rheumatology with a focus on comorbidities in inflammatory rheumatic diseases while maintaining an active clinical practice in the Department of Joint, Spine and Connective Tissue Diseases.

Dr. Kristensen holds a PhD in clinical research awarded in 2017. Her research program investigates comorbidities to rheumatic diseases such as inflammatory arthritis, vasculitis and systemic lupus erythematosus using clinical trials and epidemiological methods. Her work examines treatment efficacy and side effects through advanced statistical methodologies including survival analysis, time series analysis, and sophisticated confounder control techniques. Current projects focus on cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and cancer prognosis in patients with vasculitis and rheumatoid arthritis, with the goal of advancing personalized medicine for rheumatic disease patients.

Dr. Kristensen's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on patient-centered outcomes, comorbidities in rheumatic diseases, and methodological advances in rheumatology research. Her work spans clinical trials, registry studies, and epidemiological investigations, with particular emphasis on sex differences in treatment response, cardiovascular complications, and patient perspectives on treatment side effects.

With over 1000 hours of teaching since 2011, Dr. Kristensen has supervised 4 completed PhD projects, 4 current PhD students, and 2 additional projects initiating in fall 2025. She has also mentored over 25 medical students on master's theses since 2017. Her teaching portfolio includes undergraduate medical education with 8 years as a Clinical Associate Professor and 10 years of postgraduate specialist training experience.

Dr. Kristensen's research group utilizes Danish health registers and conducts randomized clinical trials to investigate rheumatic diseases. The team employs advanced statistical methods to address complex research questions in rheumatology, with particular expertise in analyzing treatment effects and comorbidities in patient populations.
