Michele Compagno

Michele Compagno is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Rheumatology at Lund University's Faculty of Medicine. With an MD and PhD, he serves as a Consultant Rheumatology Physician and is part of the teaching staff for the Medical Programme.

His research focuses on rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, inflammatory arthritis, and the relationship between diet and rheumatic diseases. His work particularly examines how dietary patterns and specific nutrients affect the risk and progression of rheumatoid arthritis. He has conducted systematic reviews on TNF inhibitors for various forms of arthritis, contributing to evidence-based treatment guidelines.

His recent publications show a strong trend toward investigating the intersection of nutrition science and rheumatology, with multiple studies examining how dietary factors influence rheumatoid arthritis risk. His systematic reviews on TNF inhibitors for juvenile idiopathic arthritis and psoriatic arthritis demonstrate his expertise in evidence-based approaches to treating inflammatory conditions.

Dr. Compagno serves as a second supervisor for PhD students, including on research related to clinical aspects of early arthritis with a focus on cardiovascular disease risk. He is actively involved in multiple research projects, including studies on environmental risk factors for systemic lupus erythematosus, infection-associated flares in SLE, and epidemiology of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies in children and adolescents in southern Sweden.

He is an active participant in educational activities, serving as an invited speaker and member of program committees for courses on pediatric rheumatology and immunology.
