Sally Bethell is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Education & Social Policy at Cardiff Metropolitan University. She currently teaches on the PGCE PE course and the Issues in PE and pedagogy undergraduate course, while also contributing to the PE provision for Primary PGCE and the MA in Physical Education and Sport.
Sally completed her undergraduate studies with a Joint BA (Hons) in Physical Education and Sociology at The University of North Wales, Bangor, followed by a PGCE in Physical Education at Exeter University.
Her research interests focus on physical education pedagogy, teacher training, and health and well-being in educational contexts. She has made significant contributions to PE curriculum development, particularly in the areas of mentoring student teachers and innovative teaching approaches in physical education. Her work bridges academic theory with practical application in school settings, with a strong emphasis on the health and well-being aspects of physical education.
Analysis of her publications reveals a consistent focus on practical approaches to physical education teaching and teacher development. Both publications demonstrate her commitment to improving pedagogical approaches in physical education, with particular attention to mentoring practices and innovative teaching methods that engage students effectively.
Sally has extensive professional experience beyond her academic role, having served as an External Examiner for the BA (Hons) with QTS at Brighton University and completed Estyn peer-inspector training. She has been involved in significant funding initiatives, including developing high quality PE CPD opportunities for trainee teachers in primary and secondary education from 2011-2014.
Before joining Cardiff Met, Sally had a substantial teaching career spanning multiple institutions. She began as a PE teacher in Oxfordshire, then spent 12 years in North Yorkshire as PE teacher, head of department, head of careers, and Advanced Skills Teacher (AST). Her work with Sport Wales as a National Trainer on the Dragon Sport project and the Health, Fitness and Well-being project has significantly influenced her approach to physical education curriculum development.
