Sally Ashton is a Lecturer at UniSA Creative, University of South Australia, where she has taught courses in creative writing, professional communication, and screenwriting since 2012. She is currently completing a PhD exploring the participation and experiences of women in the South Australian Country Fire Service through creative nonfiction. Prior to her academic role, she worked in broadcasting, education, and freelance writing, leveraging her comedic flair in diverse literary projects.
Her research interests include creative nonfiction, narrative storytelling, and interdisciplinary creative arts. Though yet to win major awards, she has been shortlisted in competitions like the Wirra Wirra Short Story Competition (2006) and the ABC interstitial short film program (2014). She received the 2018 High Achievement Student Evaluation Award for teaching excellence.
In teaching, she emphasizes creative writing practice, mentorship, and student-centered learning. Her approach is described as supportive and encouraging, blending industry experience with humor—often incorporating themes like dogs and quirky characters into her lessons.
