Dr. Salima Sulaiman is an Assistant Professor in Nursing at Brock University (since 2021), previously affiliated with Aga Khan University School of Nursing. Her research focuses on maternal perinatal mental health, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with emphasis on postpartum depression, partners’ mental health, and e-health interventions. She leads the Maternal-Infant Global Health (MiGHT) Research Team, exploring maternal mental health issues in global contexts. Current research addresses coparenting relationships in immigrant postnatal women.
Teaching interests include mental health nursing, community health, and quantitative analysis at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She supervises master’s students seeking mentors for their research programs.
Her work spans over a decade, with publications in PLOS ONE, Frontiers in Psychology, and the Asian Journal of Psychiatry. Key themes include psychosocial stressors in pregnancy, preterm birth mechanisms, and the intersection of adverse childhood experiences with maternal health outcomes. She actively contributes to professional organizations like Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Society and the Canadian Nurses Association.
Collaborations involve global teams addressing LMIC health challenges, including pandemic response and cultural determinants of mental health. Her research integrates quantitative methods with clinical interventions to improve maternal-infant outcomes in underserved populations.
