Dr. Ryan Van Lieshout is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences. He is a perinatal psychiatrist with a Ph.D. in research methods, focusing on how pregnancy and early postpartum exposures impact lifelong mental disorder risks. His work combines observational and experimental human studies to examine maternal perinatal depression, pre-pregnancy adiposity, and preterm birth effects on fetal and infant neurodevelopment.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Research Methods, McMaster University (2008-2012)
- FRCPC (Clinician Investigator), McMaster University (2008-2012)
- FRCPC (Psychiatry), McMaster University (2004-2009)
- M.D., University of Ottawa (2000-2004)
His research spans mental health, neurodevelopment, neurosciences, and perinatal psychiatry, with over 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts and $25 million in funding. Recent studies focus on optimizing psychotherapies for pregnant/postpartum women to enhance infant neurodevelopment, including group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and peer-delivered interventions.
Article Trends: His 15 most recent publications address CBT for postpartum depression, maternal obesity impacts, Indigenous youth mental health, infant emotion regulation, and neurodevelopmental outcomes linked to preterm birth. Methodologies include randomized controlled trials, longitudinal studies, and meta-analyses.
Honors:
- Canada Research Chair in Perinatal Mental Health
- $25 million+ in research funding
