Saharon Shelah is an Israeli mathematician and professor of mathematics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a position he has held since 1974. He is also a distinguished visiting professor at Rutgers University since 1986. Shelah has made profound contributions to mathematical logic, model theory, and set theory.
Shelah's educational background includes:
- B.Sc. from Tel Aviv University (1964)
- M.Sc. from Hebrew University under Haim Gaifman (1967)
- Ph.D. from Hebrew University under Michael Oser Rabin (1969)
Shelah's research primarily focuses on mathematical logic, with significant contributions to model theory and set theory. He developed classification theory which led to a solution of Morley's problem, discovered the notion of proper forcing in set theory, and created PCF theory which revealed nontrivial ZFC theorems about cardinal exponentiation despite the undecidability of basic questions in cardinal arithmetic. His work extends to constructing a Jónsson group, showing Whitehead's problem is independent of ZFC, and providing the first primitive recursive upper bound to van der Waerden's numbers.
Shelah's work has had a deep impact across multiple areas of mathematical logic. His classification theory tools have been widely applied and have led to advances in stability theory with applications in algebra and algebraic geometry. He has extended his work beyond first-order theories to abstract elementary classes, with important applications to algebra.
Shelah has received numerous prestigious awards for his contributions to mathematics:
- Erdős Prize (1977)
- Rothschild Prize (1982)
- Karp Prize (1983)
- George Pólya Prize (1992)
- Gödel Lecture (1996)
- Israel Prize (1998)
- Bolyai Prize (2000)
- Wolf Prize in Mathematics (2001)
- EMET Prize (2011)
- Leroy P. Steele Prize (2013)
- Hausdorff Medal (2017)
- Rolf Schock Prize (2018)
Shelah has mentored several students, most notably Rami Grossberg. His prolific research output includes over 1100 peer-reviewed papers and numerous influential books. He has received significant research funding including an Advanced grant from the European Research Council in 2013.
As one of the most influential logicians of our time, Shelah's work continues to shape the landscape of mathematical logic and its applications across various mathematical disciplines.
