Sabine Hake is Professor of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where she holds the Texas Chair of German Literature and Culture and has taught since 2004. As a cultural historian specializing in nineteenth and twentieth century Germany, she has established herself as a leading scholar in German film studies and working-class cultural history.
Her research program explores the intersections of class, culture, and political ideology across different German historical periods, from the Imperial era through Weimar Republic, National Socialism, and into the post-war period. She approaches German cultural history through multiple lenses including film, architecture, literature, and political theory.
Prof. Hake's scholarly output includes eight monographs and four co-edited anthologies, with her most significant recent work being the three-volume study The Proletarian Dream examining working-class culture and political emotions in German history. Her interdisciplinary research has been supported by major institutions including the National Gallery, German Academic Exchange Service, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Fulbright, Rockefeller, Getty, and Mellon Foundations.

From 2011 to 2021, she served as editor of German Studies Review, the journal of the German Studies Association. Her teaching at UT Austin covers diverse topics including Nazi Culture and Politics, German Cinema, and German Democratic Republic culture, reflecting the breadth of her scholarly expertise.
