Daniel H. Magilow is the Lindsay Young Professor of German at the University of Tennessee, with affiliations in the Fern and Manfred Steinfeld Program in Jewish Studies, Cinema Studies Program, and Department of History. His research and teaching intersect photography, film, Holocaust Studies, Weimar Germany, and postwar memory.
- Education: BA in Comparative Literature from Columbia University; MA and PhD in German from Princeton University.
His academic focus explores visual media's role in historical trauma, particularly through photo essays, Nazi imagery in cinema, and Holocaust representation. He co-edits Holocaust and Genocide Studies and has received grants from prestigious institutions like the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Getty Foundation.
Recent publications examine photographic theory, Weimar-era visual culture, and the ethics of representing genocide in art. He serves on advisory boards for the Holocaust Educational Foundation and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
