Julie Keresztes

Dr. Julie Keresztes is a historian specializing in modern Germany with a focus on Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. She currently serves as the 2022-2025 American University and Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies Postdoctoral Fellow, teaching courses including HIST-418 Nazi Germany and HNRS-050 Honors Supplement. Previously, she taught at Tufts University from 2020 to 2022.

Her academic credentials include a PhD in History with distinction from Boston University and a BA in History from Amherst College.

Dr. Keresztes' research examines the intersection of visual culture and racial ideology in Nazi Germany, particularly through photographic practices. Her first book, Photography and the Making of the Nazi Racial Community, published by Cornell University Press in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, analyzes how photography constructed racial belonging. She is currently writing a biography of Heinrich Hoffmann, Adolf Hitler's personal photographer, and has published scholarly work in German History and Contemporary European History.
