Daniel H. Magilow is Professor of German in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with affiliate appointments in Jewish Studies, Cinema Studies, and History. He holds a PhD and MA in German from Princeton University and a BA in Comparative Literature from Columbia University.
His research focuses on photography, film, Holocaust Studies, Weimar Germany, and postwar memory. Supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Getty Foundation, German Academic Exchange Service, and University of Tennessee Humanities Center, his scholarship examines visual culture in historical contexts.
Recent publications analyze Holocaust representation trends through photography and film, emphasizing bystander complicity, photographic temporality, and media narratives. His work frequently intersects with memory politics and visual ethics.
Awards include the Pearl Resnick Postdoctoral Fellowship at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (2005-2006). He serves on the Academic Board of the Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University.
