Ryan Venturelli is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. His research focuses on isotope geochemistry and glacial systems, particularly in Antarctica, aiming to understand past cryospheric changes and their relevance to modern ice mass loss. He leads the Rates and Dates Laboratory, emphasizing field-based investigations into glacial retreat dynamics, subglacial processes, and biogeochemical interactions.
- Education:
- PhD in Marine Geology, University of South Florida (2021)
- MS in Earth and Quaternary Systems, Indiana State University (2015)
- MS in Geology, Indiana University Northwest (2013)
His research interests include reconstructing glacial chronology using isotopic methods, studying subglacial lake systems, and investigating how past environmental conditions influenced ice sheet behavior. He explores linkages between glacial meltwater dynamics, sedimentary records, and microbial communities in subglacial environments.
Key areas of focus include the Amundsen Sea Embayment and Pine Island Glacier regions, where he examines Holocene ice sheet thinning, grounding line retreat, and potential reversibility of modern glacial changes. His work integrates field sampling, geochronological techniques, and machine learning for analyzing subglacial bedforms.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Earth systems, paleoclimatology, proposal writing, and futures studies in the geosciences. He actively collaborates on Antarctic drilling projects and promotes transdisciplinary radiocarbon research methodologies.
