Professor Stephen Livingstone is a leading glaciologist and physical geographer at the University of Sheffield's School of Geography and Planning. He holds a BSc from the University of Bristol (2006) and a PhD from Durham University (2010) on ice sheet dynamics of the British-Irish Ice Sheet. His career includes a PDRA position at Durham and a NERC Fellowship before joining Sheffield in 2011. He was appointed Professor in 2020.
His research focuses on glacial geology, ice sheet dynamics, and subglacial processes. Key areas include meltwater drainage beneath ice sheets, subglacial lake dynamics, and the reconstruction of paleo-ice stream behavior. Recent work explores surface meltwater impacts on Greenland's ice dynamics and the geomorphological legacy of past ice sheets.
Research highlights include mapping subglacial meltwater corridors, analyzing subglacial lake activity in Greenland, and reconstructing the retreat of the British-Irish Ice Sheet using cosmogenic dating. His work integrates field data, remote sensing, and numerical modeling to address climate-driven ice sheet instability.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on cryosphere science, remote sensing, and research methodology. He leads initiatives like the Peak District glacial history project and has secured grants totaling over £260k from NERC. His research outputs span over 100 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Nature, Quaternary Science Reviews, and Earth Surface Processes and Landforms.
