Ryan Smerek is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of the MS in Learning and Organizational Change (MSLOC) program at Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy (SESP). He specializes in organizational learning, leadership development, and workplace culture. His research focuses on topics such as new executive transitions, innovation, and the intersection of technology with organizational behavior. Smerek holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (2009), an EdM from Harvard University (2004), and a BA from Dartmouth College (2000). Prior to Northwestern, he taught at Hiram College and worked at Denison Consulting. He is the author of two books: Speaking Up at Work (2023) and Organizational Learning and Performance (2017). His teaching spans design thinking, cognitive design, and people analytics. Smerek’s work emphasizes practical applications of research to drive organizational effectiveness and cultural change.
His research has explored crisis management in the digital age (e.g., social media’s role in leadership), the impact of executive coaching, and the challenges faced by new college presidents. He leads the Organizational Effectiveness Certificate program at MSLOC and maintains an active presence in academic and professional communities.
