Ryan Otterson serves as an Instructor in Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD), where he teaches courses including Environmental Systems 2 [Module 2] for Fall 2025. He is a registered architect in Massachusetts and co-founder of Ji Otterson Studio, a cross-cultural practice operating between Boston and Seoul.
His academic credentials include a Master in Architecture II with Distinction from Harvard University (2014) and a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas (2012), where he received the Thayer Medal for design excellence.
Otterson's research centers on sustainable building systems, specifically investigating how thermally massive materials impact thermal comfort, energy consumption, and embodied carbon in architectural design. His work at the Harvard Center for Green Buildings and Cities on the HouseZero project demonstrates his commitment to climate-responsive building typologies and ecological construction methodologies.
His professional recognition includes:
- Inaugural Seoul Biennale Award (2023)
- 2nd Place in Seoul Metropolitan Government’s International Competition for Banpo River Connection-Park Facilities
- Tied Top Prize in Seoul’s International Ideas Competition for Seoul Station
