Ryan Middagh is an Assistant Professor of Jazz and Area Chair of Jazz and Global Music at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music. He holds a B.M.E. from Northern Iowa, an M.A. from MTSU, and a D.Arts from Northern Colorado. His work focuses on jazz education, composition, and performance, with notable achievements including national recognition for the Blair School's jazz program and Grammy-winning collaborations.
Research interests include jazz pedagogy, global music integration, and innovative ensemble arrangements. He leads the Ryan Middagh Jazz Orchestra and directs Vanderbilt's Blair Big Band, producing acclaimed albums like Such Sweet Thunder and Songbook. Awards include Vanderbilt’s Chancellor’s Cup and Nashville Scene’s Best Jazz Educator.
He serves as Affiliate Faculty for the Center for Latin American Studies and on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee. Grants include the 2017 Provost Research Studio Grant and 2018 Research Scholar Grant. Collaborations span the Nashville Symphony, Toto’s David Paich, and actor Bob Newhart.
