Ryan Coyne is an Associate Professor of Philosophy of Religions and Theology at the University of Chicago's College. He holds both an MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. His research explores the intersection of modern European philosophy and Christian theology, with a focus on phenomenology, hermeneutics, and deconstruction. He is the author of Heidegger’s Confessions: The Remains of Saint Augustine in Being and Time and Beyond (2015) and is currently completing A Spectacle for the Gods: Nietzsche and the Question of Faith. Additionally, he is developing a third book, The Dreams of Metaphysicians, addressing deconstruction and method in the philosophy of religion.
His teaching emphasizes themes such as subjectivity, temporality, and religious experience across ancient, medieval, and modern texts. Coyne’s interests further include Christian mysticism, Augustinian theology, and Freudian psychoanalysis. He is based in Swift 303A and can be reached at rcoyne@uchicago.edu.
Notable scholarly contributions include critical analyses of Martin Heidegger’s engagement with Augustine and Friedrich Nietzsche’s redefinition of faith post-secularism.
