Ryan Balzan is an Associate Professor at Flinders University in the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work. He serves as Director of the Cognitive Neuropsychiatry Laboratory within the Flinders Institute for Mental Health and Wellbeing, and is also Clinic Director of the Flinders University Psychology Clinic. As a registered Clinical Psychologist (Registration Number: PSY0001891984), he maintains active membership in several professional organizations including the Australian Psychological Society and Australian Association for Cognitive and Behaviour Therapy.
Dr. Balzan's research focuses on understanding the psychological processes underlying mental illness, particularly how biased thinking styles contribute to conditions like psychosis, eating disorders, and depression. His work investigates cognitive factors responsible for problematic beliefs characteristic of mental disorders, including persecutory delusions in schizophrenia and overvalued ideas in anorexia nervosa. He has made significant contributions to developing novel psychological interventions, most notably metacognitive training (MCT) programs that target cognitive biases thought to cause and maintain delusions.
His recent research has expanded to address conspiracy and pseudoscience beliefs, developing online digital psychological interventions designed to reduce symptoms of mental illness, prevent their onset in at-risk populations, and educate the public about harmful misinformation. His publication record shows consistent output with 83 research outputs, including numerous articles in high-impact journals across multiple disciplines including cognitive psychology, clinical psychology, and psychiatry.
Dr. Balzan has received numerous prestigious awards including the Australian Psychological Society Early Career Research Award (2017), Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy Award (2017), Frank Dalziel Prize for Best PhD (2012), and the University of Adelaide Medal. He has also been recognized with Flinders University's Academic Award for Integrity and Excellence and Innovation in Learning and Teaching Award.
As an educator, Dr. Balzan coordinates and lectures on topics including Psychological Disorders and Psychopharmacology, Applied Research for Practitioners, and Interviewing and Counselling. His work contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals related to mental health and wellbeing. He has been featured in media publications including In Daily, Flinders in Touch, and Southern Health News, and has been interviewed on science radio broadcasts about psychological interventions for psychosis.
