Ruwani Fernando is a Lecturer in Criminology at the Sheffield Institute of Law and Justice, part of Sheffield Hallam University's College of Social Sciences and Arts. She joined the institution in February 2021. Her expertise focuses on desistance from crime, rehabilitation, community-based punishment, and international criminological perspectives, supported by qualitative research methods.
Dr. Fernando holds a PhD from the University of Sheffield (2021), where her thesis Comparing Desistance Processes: A Cross-National Analysis of English and French Narratives was supervised by Prof. Stephen Farrall, Dr. Cormac Behan, and Dr. David Thompson. Prior to academia, she worked in Paris probation services and completed an MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Edinburgh.
Her research includes projects in England, France, and Bhutan, including advising the French Economic, Social and Environmental Council on prisoner resettlement strategies. She teaches modules such as Life Beyond Crime, Criminal Justice Compared, and Experiencing Custodial and Community Sentences.
Her publications analyze probation systems and desistance narratives, with a forthcoming book Comparing Pathways of Desistance (Routledge). She contributes to the Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice and Social and Economic Research Institute, focusing on global criminal justice dynamics.
