Ruveyda Gozen

Ruveyda Gozen is an Assistant Professor at Cardiff Business School and a Research Associate at the London School of Economics (LSE) for the Programme of Innovation and Diffusion (POID) directed by John Van Reenen. She hosts The Innovation and Diffusion Podcast with John Van Reenen, available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

Her research expertise lies in applied microeconomics with a particular focus on the economics of innovation, entrepreneurship, institutions, inequality, and technological progress. She has conducted extensive research on women inventors and patenting, historical differences in female-owned manufacturing establishments, and international technological trajectories.

Dr. Gozen's research shows how stronger property rights for women led to a 40% increase in patenting activity among women in the long run, with effects peaking about a decade after the Married Women's Property Acts were introduced. Her work on historical female-owned manufacturing establishments reveals that these establishments were smaller than male-owned ones and had lower capital-to-output ratios, but employed more women and paid them higher wages. Her research on international technological trajectories documents the globalization of patenting after WWII, the technological overtaking of Europe by the US around the Second Industrial Revolution, and the rise of Chinese innovation in the 2010s.

Her recent work on Brexit demonstrates that innovation in the UK has declined and patent collaborations with the European Union fell significantly following Brexit, suggesting serious negative implications for UK economic outcomes in the long run.

She teaches Advanced Microeconomics (BST171) for Ph.D. and MSc students in Economics at Cardiff Business School.
