Dr. Montgomery's research focuses on effects of aging on innate immunity and individual variation influencing susceptibility to West Nile, dengue, Zika and COVID-19 viruses. She employs systems-wide studies to identify individual differences in immune responses that lead to divergent outcomes to infection, with particular emphasis on inflammatory profiling of patients with sickle cell disease. She has overseen studies of immune responsiveness in human cohorts with successful enrollment of over 2,000 healthy individuals and is notable for her use of primary human cells to demonstrate immune-related mechanisms.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on immune profiling in viral infections, particularly COVID-19, with multiple high-impact papers identifying immune signatures associated with disease severity, mortality, and long-term outcomes. She has pioneered the use of multi-omics approaches to understand individual variation in immune responses.
- Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science (2025)
- Member, Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (2020)
Dr. Montgomery launched the CyTOF facility at Yale in 2013, enabling advanced single-cell immune profiling. She has been actively involved in major research initiatives including the IMPACC study on immune responses to SARS-CoV-2. Her work bridges basic immunology with clinical applications, particularly in understanding how aging affects immune responses to viral pathogens.
She leads the CyTOF Facility at Yale and is deeply involved with the Yale Center for Research on Aging (Y-Age), where her work on age-related changes in immunity has important implications for understanding susceptibility to infectious diseases in older adults.
