Ruth McDowell is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Hiram College, teaching courses in ecology and evolution. She earned her B.S. in Biology from Duke University, where she studied blue crab reproduction, followed by a PhD in Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), focusing on marine chemical ecology in Antarctic ecosystems. Her postdoctoral research at UAB School of Medicine and Cleveland Clinic explored biomedical topics like Type 1 diabetes and pulmonary arterial hypertension. She previously taught at Kaua’i Community College, John Carroll University, and Oberlin College.
Research interests include aquatic chemical ecology, with a focus on marine ecosystems and biomedical applications. Her work spans Antarctic seaweed defenses, metabolic pathways in diabetes, and inflammatory responses in adipocytes. She is a certified SCUBA diver with extensive fieldwork experience in Antarctica, logging over 75 dry suit dives.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary research in marine ecology and human medicine, emphasizing metabolic mechanisms and environmental interactions. Advising and grants are not explicitly detailed, but her career reflects a blend of academic teaching and collaborative research across institutions. She is affiliated with field stations and maintains a strong connection to both polar and biomedical research environments.
